Fenland Classic Car Tour - 27th June 2010

Arrival : Collect your route map and guidance.

The meeting point is Anglesey Abbey and Gardens on the B1102, by the A14, just north of Cambridge.
Cars are welcome to arrive around 10 am as we will be leaving at 10.30. There is a cafe serving snacks and hot drinks. Toilets are also available. You might also have time to visit the garden centre and small shop.
South of the River Cam , Anglesey Abbey and Garden is run by the National Trust. The house dates from 1600 and is on the site of a 12th century prior. The gardens are beautiful and well worth a visit.

Morning Tour: (60min)
Leaving at 10.30 we will head east towards Newmarket and explore some of the quaint villages around that area before heading back over the A14. At Chippenham you can look out for the action taking place at the unique Wild Tracks Activity Centre. Heading out into more open fenland we will eventually arrive at the Prickwillow Drainage museum at approximately 11.30. Here you can see the a variety of large and small drainage engines; play with the interactive exhibits; have a hot drink or just chat with others in the large car park.
At approximately, 12.30 we will then head off through the historic city of Ely and then once again out onto small fenland roads before arriving in having Sutton via a drive round winding fenland roads.

Lunch 1pm-1.45pm
Sutton Feast committee have kindly offered to organise a BBQ in Sutton at the village hall for a small charge and this provides a great opportunity to meet up again. There is good parking at the Brooklands Centre and we will pause to join them for lunch and a chat. There is access to toilets and a range of drinks.

Afternoon Tour (45min)
Leaving at 2pm we will continue to head to Willingham past the River Ouse. Keep a look out for Over Windmill and beautiful thatched cottages as we continue to explore many of the villages just north of Cambridge. Finally, we will arrive at Milton and the Country Park.

End of the Day Rally.
Milton Country Park is a country park is on the northern edge of Cambridge very close to the A14/A10 junction. We have been invited to park up within the park itself. It offers a varied natural habitat interlaced with a network of over two miles of paths and lakes to explore. There is play area for children, a sensory garden. Dogs are also welcome and can be walked off lead at the northern end of the park. The Dion cafe provides a range of hot drinks and snacks. You are welcome to stay until the park closes.

There is a Tesco Service Station at the entrance to the park, if you need petrol before heading off home.

Dave

Had every intention of joining you for the run & staying somewhere overnight. It does sound excellent. Unfortunately daughter now requires bringing home from Uni on 27th. Sometimes our lives are not our own! Good luck with the event.

Sounds like a great event David and ideal for me; but we are fixed for a big family wedding that day for which I have to drive the happy couple in the R-R. Hope to see you again at the Anglia Elveden event July25. Have a great run.

Great day out. People seemed to really enjoy it and have asked already when I'm organising another!

In the end we had 23 cars turn up. We had a excellent mix of marques ranging from a 1933 Austin 7 , Daimler Consorts Morgans, MG's;to more modern Jaguar XJ-S's. Landrovers, opels, hillmans, and loads of Moggy Minors, including a very popular Panda Car complete with blue light.

On the hottest day of the year, we set off after being warmly welcomed at Anglesey Abbey. A drive round the lovely villages of Suffolk and then out into the open fen. We stopped briefly at Moulton to view the sights and then onto Prickwillow Drainage Museum. After this we headed of for a BBq before heading back towards Cambridge and Milton Country Park. People sat in the sun expressing satifaction with the day before heading home to catch up on the football!

Anyway, already planning a run for next year as I learnt a lot and have loads of new ideas to enhance the whole experience.

One vehicle suffered a puncture and one or two wandered off the route, but all in all it was a really good day out.
Maybe we could attract more Daimler members next year??
